MPSPF is a regional pain neuromuscular disorder that affects muscles and fascia. MPSPF has substantial symptomatic variability and, thus, reaching a rapid and precise diagnosis is difficult ( 10– 16). MPSPF can affect any muscle in the pelvic area or adjacent areas and is associated with urinary, gynecological, proctological, neurological and sexual dysfunctions. Studies have increasingly correlated MPSPF and CPP ( 7– 9). CPP is more prevalent among women ( 5) compared with men ( 6). Mathias et al ( 4) estimated the worldwide incidence to be between 2% and 16%. In the United States, approximately 12% of the general population is affected by CPP, and the lifetime prevalence is 33% ( 3).
CPP is localized in the pelvic region and persists for at least six months ( 1). Myofascial pain syndrome of the pelvic floor (MPSPF) is a common disease in the context of chronic pelvic pain (CPP) ( 1, 2).
